Indian Culture - A rational approach

Much has been made of India’s cultural peculiarities and much interest has been generated amongst people across the globe  about India and the far east as a whole. The flag bearers of Indian culture have on the one hand shown with thorough research and exemplary hard work that India’s heritage and culture though recieved heavy blows because of the mughal onslaught and the colonial disturbance it’s contributions far exceed any failure or shortcomings. Scientists like CK Raju and MK Sarma have worked for at least 40 years now on the development of calculus and other sciences in India. Their work has generated a lot of chaos in the west and the west now realises that there is a true contender to challenge their hegemony in the arts and sciences. A matter of disappointment though is that despite Dr Raju’s and the efforts of others the government has failed to act on these matters. The Congress government failed maybe because there was a danger that it might offend ome minority community or there might be external political pressure. What is beyond my understanding is that why, when a nationalistic government is in power it has failed to act on these matters despite repeated requests by Prof Raju and other academics. (I know this because he told me in person that he has been trying to talk to the governments and different ministers but it is very difficult to change the system)

I think the younger generation has a lesson or two to learn from prof Raju. Throughout his life, all of his academic work has consisted of honest research and an honest potryal of facts in all their glory be it offensive to Indians or a thing of pride. A science historian has a hard enough job to understand the science and the historical context in which it developed but I think the most difficult thing to do for a science historian is to be truthful. Prof Raju has been nothing but truthful. He has never had a biased view about the mathematics that came out of India nor does he have any resentment towards the Europeans today for what the church and it’s minions did so many years ago. He has been asking for critical examination of everything and also an attempt to revive our knowledge systems and schools of philosophy so that students get a bigger picture about life and the Universe. A rational person in India today is one who criticizes Indian traditions and culture and rejects anything that is non western. That is what colonial education has done to our minds. All education should be nationalistic meaning that it should serve towards the welfare of the nation and by itself should invigorate national pride. This is only possible when we decolonise our schools, textbooks,Universities,Public institutions etc so that our people can think for themselves without looking towards the west for answers and then creating ad hoc solutions by imitation. For this to happen we need people like prof Raju to guide us which he is already willing to do. Prof Raju is a true nationalist for his work contributes to the swaraj of our people and it is about time that as a society we recognize such unique thinkers so that their spirit to give never dies.

Lastly I would like to say that we should be considerate of the things that come out of (also)non western cultures and we should only accept or reject something after a critical examination and not based on authority or public opinion.
